FIFA Considers Historic Debut Badge for 2026 World Cup
FIFA is studying a special badge for players making their first World Cup appearance in 2026, to be worn only during their debut match.

A special badge marking a player's first-ever World Cup appearance could be introduced on jerseys at the 2026 tournament, according to an English report. The initiative aims to highlight new stars on global football's biggest stage.
The badge, tentatively called the "debut badge," would be worn only during a player's first match in the competition. It would be removed immediately after the final whistle, with the badge later preserved inside a commemorative card documenting the player's World Cup debut.
The concept is not entirely novel. American network ESPN noted that similar badges have been used in other sports competitions within the United States before being proposed for the 2026 World Cup edition.
A large number of players are expected to participate in the tournament for the first time. Notable names include Norway's Erling Haaland and Spain's Lamine Yamal, alongside numerous other rising talents from various national teams.
The move is designed to help fans identify new players and give each debut a unique, personal significance within the tournament, enhancing the individual experience of the global event.
Should FIFA formally adopt the initiative, the badge could also appear on the jerseys of players from Arab national teams making their first-ever World Cup appearance.
The 2026 World Cup, the first to feature 48 teams, is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
