Grok Voice Mode Arrives on Apple CarPlay for Drivers
xAI launches Grok voice mode on Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers hands-free conversations with Elon Musk’s AI assistant.

Drivers can now talk directly to Elon Musk’s AI assistant while on the road, as xAI rolls out its “Grok voice mode” feature on Apple CarPlay. The move marks a new front in the competition among chatbot services inside vehicles.
The feature is available through the latest update of the Grok app on iPhones. Users can hold full voice conversations with the AI assistant—asking questions, getting quick information, or exchanging ideas while driving—all without using their hands.
Limited Capabilities, Strong Start
Although Grok has reached cars that support CarPlay, the current experience is less integrated than its presence inside Tesla vehicles. The assistant cannot control car systems such as navigation or air conditioning, nor does it respond to a wake phrase like “Hey Grok.” Instead, users must manually launch the app first.
Still, the step represents a significant expansion for xAI. CarPlay support brings Grok to millions of iPhone users across multiple car brands, rather than limiting it to Tesla vehicles alone.
AI Race Moves to the Dashboard
Grok’s arrival on CarPlay comes amid a fast-paced race among AI companies to reach automotive systems. Recently, apps like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity have begun appearing inside car infotainment systems, after Apple opened the door to third-party voice assistants.
Grok aims to stand out with a different personality—adopting a sarcastic, more “daring” tone compared to traditional, calm assistants. While some see this character as potentially making the driving experience more enjoyable, others worry it could become a source of distraction and chaos inside the car, especially during traffic jams and long drives.
