In a step aimed at setting new standards for AI data privacy, OpenAI has officially announced the launch of the "Advanced Account Security" feature. This strategic initiative comes in response to increasing demands from users in sensitive sectors, and to provide maximum protection against sophisticated cyberattacks targeting professional accounts.

What is "Advanced Account Security"?

It is an "optional" security system currently available via account settings on both ChatGPT and Codex platforms. This feature is designed to act as a super-strong layer of protection, aiming to eliminate the risks of phishing and account hacking, by shifting from traditional methods to nearly unhackable security protocols.

Key Technical Features and Security Shifts

The new feature includes radical changes in how accounts are accessed and recovered, as follows:

  • Goodbye Passwords: The feature relies entirely on Passkeys or physical security keys (such as YubiKey). This shift completely eliminates the possibility of login data theft via phishing pages.

  • Closing Recovery Vulnerabilities: Traditional recovery methods via email or SMS have been eliminated due to their ease of compromise. Instead, reliance is exclusively on encrypted "Recovery Keys" manually retained by the user.

  • Strict Session Management: Reducing the duration of active sessions to ensure accounts do not remain open for extended periods, with immediate and detailed notifications for any login attempt.

  • Automatic Exclusion from Model Training: The feature grants additional privacy, as user conversations are automatically excluded from AI model training, ensuring the confidentiality of professional secrets and personal data.

  • Targeted Categories: "High-Risk" Protection

OpenAI affirmed that this feature is primarily aimed at individuals and organizations handling highly sensitive information, including:

    1. Journalists and Activists: To protect sources and field data.

    2. Officials and Researchers: To secure correspondence and scientific results.

    3. Programmers and Companies: Who use the "Codex" platform to develop sensitive software.

    Important Warning: Full User Responsibility

The company issued a strong warning to users wishing to activate the feature; that full responsibility transfers to the user. In the event of losing access keys and recovery keys, OpenAI's support team will not be able to recover the account permanently, to ensure there is no "backdoor" that hackers could exploit, making the management of recovery keys a vital, error-intolerant task.

Do you think these strict measures are necessary to protect your data on ChatGPT, or do they make account access overly complicated?
