Persistent armpit odor in summer is caused by bacteria mixing with sweat, not sweat itself, says a doctor.

The belief that a shower alone eliminates body odor is widespread, but persistent armpit smell—especially during the summer months—often points to underlying health factors and everyday habits. Dr. Marisa Garshick explains that the unpleasant scent does not originate from sweat itself, but from the interaction of sweat with bacteria naturally present on the skin, a process intensified by higher temperatures and increased perspiration in summer.
The human body has two types of sweat glands. One type helps cool the body down, while the other secretes fluids in areas like the armpits. When these fluids mix with bacteria, they can produce a strong odor.
Medical professionals recommend keeping the armpit area dry, wearing lightweight cotton clothing, and using an antibacterial body wash during the summer. If the odor remains noticeable despite good personal hygiene, a doctor's consultation is advised.
