After the Baabda Meeting on the General Amnesty... Displeasure Among a Number of Deputies

MTV reported that displeasure emerged among a number of deputies who did not participate in yesterday's meeting with President Joseph Aoun regarding the general amnesty, which they considered a lack of respect for the separation of powers, without questioning the good intentions of Aoun to bring viewpoints closer, and they asked: "The deputies called each other to hold this meeting, did they not notice that those who signed this law are not present with them?"
Notably, these individuals objected to phrases added to the consensus formulas that practically do not allow the release of the largest number of Islamist detainees from prison, and re-link an entire category to terrorism charges. The deputies continued and asked: "Are these only the terrorists? Why did you not also prosecute those who fought alongside the Syrian regime in Syria for terrorism?"
MTV reported that Deputy Ali Hassan Khalil contacted the President and the Prime Minister yesterday, confirming that the "Shiite duo" is proceeding with the consensus formula regarding the general amnesty that resulted from the meeting of the deputies with President Aoun.
Despite the positive atmosphere resulting from the meeting between some deputies and the President, the atmosphere of other deputies does not suggest, as of now, a final consensus on the general amnesty law. Likewise, the atmosphere so far does not suggest the possibility of holding a session of the joint parliamentary committees this week, noting that the law has not yet fallen and political contacts are still ongoing.
