Switzerland's 2026 World Cup squad: Key players and predicted XI
Switzerland secured their World Cup spot unbeaten, blending experienced leaders with rising talents for a potential deep run.

Fourteen goals, six matches unbeaten, and a top-of-the-table finish in qualifying have earned Switzerland a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Swiss swept past Kosovo, Slovenia, and Sweden, finishing three points clear to book their ticket to North America, where they will face co-hosts Canada, Qatar, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the group stage.
Though their best World Cup results remain quarter-final appearances in 1934 and 1954, the current squad carries a mix of battle-hardened veterans and emerging talents that could change that narrative. Veterans Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez, and captain Granit Xhaka bring decades of top-level experience, while younger players like Johan Manzambi (20) offer fresh energy. The retirements of Xherdan Shaqiri, Yann Sommer, and Haris Seferovic have opened the door for a new generation to step up.
Goalkeeping and defensive spine
With Sommer's international retirement two years ago, Borussia Dortmund's Gregor Kobel has taken over as the starting goalkeeper after serving as understudy. Yvon Mvogo (Lorient) and Marvin Keller (Young Boys) are expected to provide backup. Kobel has built a strong reputation in the Bundesliga and is considered among the most reliable shot-stoppers heading into the tournament.
At the back, manager Murat Yakin leans heavily on Akanji and Rodriguez. Akanji, now at Inter Milan, won seven major trophies with Manchester City and is well known to Premier League audiences. Rodriguez, once an assist machine from left-back during his Wolfsburg days, remains a creative threat even if his numbers have dipped. Nico Elvedi, a Borussia Mönchengladbach mainstay, is likely to partner Akanji at centre-back, while Mainz's Silvan Widmer fills the right-back role. Depth comes from Miro Muheim, Eray Cömert, Luca Jaquez, and Aurele Amenda, all playing in Europe's top five leagues.
Midfield engine room
Granit Xhaka, closing in on 150 international caps, is a near-certain starter in central midfield unless injury intervenes. The former Arsenal captain provides leadership and a powerful shot from distance. Supporting him in mobility are Remo Freuler and Michel Aebischer. Denis Zakaria, who struggled at Chelsea but performs consistently for Monaco, remains in the squad. Freiburg's Johan Manzambi, at 20 the country's most exciting prospect, adds youthful dynamism alongside Sevilla's Djibril Sow and Al-Shabab's Vincent Sierro.
Attack and predicted lineup
Up front, Rennes striker Breel Embolo (29) is the primary goalscoring threat. Though he never secured the big transfer predicted during his Basel and Schalke days, Embolo has rarely disappointed for Switzerland, notably scoring against England at Euro 2024 before their penalty shootout exit. Dan Ndoye, after a quiet first season at Nottingham Forest, offers explosive dribbling and versatility, while Ruben Vargas' positioning and movement make him a constant danger in the box.
Switzerland typically deploy a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, with the former expected for the World Cup. The predicted starting XI sees Kobel in goal; Widmer, Elvedi, Akanji, and Rodriguez across the back; Freuler, Xhaka, and Sow in midfield; and Ndoye, Embolo, and Vargas leading the attack.
