OpenAI updated its ChatGPT Chrome extension to access browser tabs, enabling personalized answers and complex multi-step tasks via the Work agent.

Users of the ChatGPT Chrome extension can now leverage their open browser tabs to generate more tailored responses. OpenAI introduced this capability in a recent update, allowing the AI assistant to analyze content across multiple tabs simultaneously. This feature enables the tool to compare specific details, such as dimensions, prices, delivery times, and return policies, from products viewed on different pages.
The update significantly expands the functionality of ChatGPT Work, an agent designed for handling complex, multi-step operations. Within this mode, the assistant can perform actions like sending messages, organizing tabs, and filling out forms. For example, a user might instruct ChatGPT to complete a new patient form for a dentist and subsequently add the appointment to their calendar.
Another practical application involves analyzing terms from several contractors displayed in separate tabs. The system can then draft an email to the provider that best aligns with the user's requirements. These capabilities position the extension as a robust tool for automating routine digital workflows directly within the browser interface.
Access to the full browsing history is now available through the ChatGPT sidebar in Chrome. This integration allows users to assign tasks or ask questions without leaving their current webpage. The extension remains compatible with other Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera, ensuring broad accessibility regardless of the user's chosen platform.
OpenAI retired its standalone browser product on August 9 but continued to enhance the Chrome extension. Recent upgrades have strengthened ChatGPT’s viability as an alternative to Gemini within the browser environment. The latest iteration brings the full power of ChatGPT into the tab itself, merging chat and work functionalities side by side with active web content.
