Google Gemini's new overlay interface launches on Wear OS with partial rollout

Version 1.36 of Google Gemini for Wear OS has broadly reached users via the Play Store, but the newly introduced overlay interface remains subject to a server-side rollout that is not yet complete.

The updated design replaces the previous full-app launch with an overlay that appears directly atop the user’s current watch face—mirroring the behavior seen on Android phones and tablets. This change aligns Wear OS with the Neural Expressive visual language already in use across Android mobile devices.

What the new overlay includes

The interface incorporates Gemini’s Neural Expressive background, the spark icon, and a greeting prompt. Play Store screenshots confirm it displays a transcript of the user’s spoken or typed input alongside action confirmations. A minor but notable adjustment relocates the system microphone privacy indicator from the bottom edge of the screen to the top.

The redesign first appeared in preview form in May and was previously demonstrated on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 before its official release on the Pixel Watch 4.

Platform-wide visual unification

Both the overlay and the full Gemini app on Wear OS now share the same updated visual treatment, contributing to cross-platform consistency. Google has made no announced modifications to Gemini’s underlying response generation or functionality as part of this update.

Gemini Intelligence on Wear OS continues to support task automation features slated for upcoming watches. Additional Gemini developments include plans for future mobile and desktop app creation, expanded Chrome-based auto-browsing capabilities via Gemini Spark, international rollout of AI Pro access, and voice control plus Gboard Rambler-level transcription for the macOS version.
