Elon Musk announced that the Grok Bot agent will now select from various external AI models, including Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, to optimize user outcomes.

Elon Musk revealed via Twitter that the Grok Bot agent service has transitioned into a model router. This update allows the system to choose from a variety of artificial intelligence models to determine which one is "most likely to give you the best outcome" for specific user requests. The announcement follows SpaceX's release of its Grok 4.7 model just two weeks prior, which the company claimed was competitive with frontier models in coding and knowledge work.
The routing mechanism will direct simple questions to small, fast models while sending complex queries to larger ones. According to Musk, the available options include Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, the AI image generator MidJourney, and the AI audio maker Suno. While not explicitly named by Musk, other unnamed models are expected to be part of the selection pool. SpaceX’s own Grok 4.7 is presumably included among these choices, though the CEO did not specify this detail directly.
This move suggests SpaceX may be shifting focus from frontier model domination to serving as infrastructure for other AI companies. Earlier this year, SpaceX entered an agreement with rival Anthropic—previously described by Musk as “evil”—to allow the use of the Colossus data center for training and running the Claude model. Musk also confirmed on Twitter that Reflection AI’s new open-source model, Beam, was trained on Colossus servers.
There is no indication that SpaceX will cease developing its own models. Musk had recently predicted that his company would bypass all competitors by version 5. Reports also indicate a potential name change from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, reflecting a pursuit of “super intelligence” and aligning with Donald Trump’s efforts to rebrand AI perception. Given the significant capital already invested in building out AI infrastructure, renting server space presents a cleaner business model than monetizing proprietary AI models.
