Anthropic recorded losses totaling $80 billion over a six-month period, according to a Wall Street Journal report. This figure represents a sharp increase from the $13 billion in losses reported one year prior. The surge was primarily driven by $72 billion in accounting charges associated with changes in the value of financial instruments the company issued to raise capital. The data stems from a draft prospectus for the firm’s initial public offering.

Financial metrics and revenue growth

Revenue at Anthropic jumped to $16.3 billion during the six months ending June 30, compared to $1.1 billion in the same period the previous year. Infrastructure spending on artificial intelligence rose to approximately $9 billion, nearly quadrupling its earlier level. These figures highlight the steep costs of the AI race as investors scrutinize whether massive expenditures on chips and data centers will yield significant returns.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report, and Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment. Earlier in September, Reuters reported that Anthropic posted net losses of $42 billion in 2025, citing the company’s IPO prospectus. The firm has benefited from the growing popularity of "Claude Code," a software assistant used by developers to write programs and build applications.

Investor scrutiny on valuation

Current and potential investors who attended an investor day hosted by Anthropic last week are considering lowering the company’s expected valuation following the release of these latest financial details. Four individuals familiar with the matter told Reuters that attendees discussed valuing the firm at around $1.5 trillion. This marks a substantial drop from the previously anticipated valuation of approximately $2 trillion for the planned November listing.

During the meeting in San Francisco, Anthropic informed investors that third-quarter revenue surged 45 percent to $16.8 billion compared to the preceding quarter. The company stated it achieved profitability during the quarter based on adjusted metrics that exclude certain accounting items.

Implications for the AI sector

A decline in investor enthusiasm for Anthropic’s initial public offering could impact the broader artificial intelligence market. Investors view the near-term outlook for the sector as heavily dependent on the success of this listing, which precedes the potential debut of competitor OpenAI next year.
