Global equity markets experienced severe volatility at the close of trading on Tuesday, driven by a collective decline in shares of major technology and semiconductor companies. This downturn followed an announcement made late last week by a Chinese manufacturer of memory chips, which confirmed achieving a technical breakthrough and significant progress in manufacturing engineering. The development reshaped the competitive landscape and sparked investor concerns worldwide.

The 4F square architecture impact

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced the successful development of a new chip architecture known as "4F square" technology. According to published data cited by Investing.com, this structure allows advanced cells to store greater amounts of data within extremely small spaces. Consequently, this increases memory density and doubles storage efficiency for computer servers and artificial intelligence systems.

CXMT represents China’s primary local competitor against traditional industry giants. Reports indicate the company plans to launch the first memory server utilizing this entirely new technology by the end of 2026. This timeline mirrors the technical path revealed by South Korean firm SK Hynix, which developed similar capabilities in 2025.

Sector-wide market reaction

Market responses were immediate, with fears reflected instantly in the share prices of suppliers and competitors. Both the Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq indices began Tuesday’s session lower, following renewed selling pressure on electronic chip stocks. Micron’s shares fell by 3.7% in early pre-market trading. Other companies specializing in storage solutions, including SanDisk, Western Digital, and Seagate, also saw their stock values decline.

In Asian markets, South Korean equities suffered a heavy blow. SK Hynix shares closed down sharply by 10%, while its rival Samsung Electronics dropped 7.4%. Until recently, CXMT was not widely recognized outside of China. However, a radical shift in its trajectory began with a major leap in July during its initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

CXMT valuation and growth

At that time, the company recorded a rocket-like surge of 466% on its first day of trading, immediately becoming the most valuable company among all those listed on Chinese exchanges. Although its shares have fallen by no more than 4% compared to the IPO price of 49 yuan per share, CXMT retains a massive market capitalization of $520 billion. This valuation places it in competition with Chinese tech giant Tencent.

Despite US restrictions on Chinese chips, data from HSBC indicates that CXMT’s share of the global Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) market has risen from just 4% a year ago to approximately 10% currently.
