Binance reports a security breach causing $6.3 billion in losses, potentially the largest crypto theft ever, triggering market volatility and investor concern.

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, announced that a security breach resulted in losses estimated at approximately $6.3 billion, which analysts described as potentially the largest cryptocurrency theft on record and may prompt investors to reconsider the risks of holding digital assets.
Binance stated that it collaborated with partners to freeze affected assets by locating approximately three billion dollars so far. It did not provide updates regarding the status of the remaining $3.3 billion, and Yi He, a co-founder of the platform, said the company would bear "all losses from the hack."
Binance indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the breach likely began through infiltration of a laptop belonging to one of its engineers, allowing the attacker access to one of the company's systems and unauthorized withdrawals.
Market reaction was swift at the start of Asian trading on Friday.
The price of Bitcoin fell by more than three percent to its lowest level in six weeks at $76,368, while Ether's price also dropped by over three percent to reach a two-month low of $2,178. The price of BNB, the coin launched by Binance that can be used to pay platform fees, decreased by five percent over the past 24 hours to $709.70, according to CoinGecko, a site specializing in collecting market data.
This incident could be the largest cryptocurrency theft in the world, according to analytics firm Chainalysis and other experts in the field.
Analysts said this breach, along with the potential loss of assets, is likely to have greater repercussions for cryptocurrencies, which are already under pressure recently due to high US interest rates and declining demand from buyers of exchange-traded funds.
The platform's annual report for 2025 stated that it includes 335 million registered users worldwide and that the value of assets deposited with it reached approximately $162.8 billion. It allows users to buy, sell, and trade digital assets.
Binance said in a statement, "Users' funds remain safe... As a precautionary measure, all deposits and withdrawals have been temporarily suspended while security teams conduct checks, secure wallet infrastructure, and track affected assets with close support from our partners in law enforcement and the sector."
