2027 Set to Become World’s Hottest Year on Record, Driven by Unprecedented
New climate models project 2027 will surpass 2024 as the hottest year globally, with current El Niño conditions expected to peak in September and persist through February, pushing global temperatures temporarily above 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

In a year marked by record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires, floods, and droughts across multiple regions, scientific attention is turning early to 2027 — amid warnings that the current El Niño event is intensifying toward unprecedented strength, potentially making it the most powerful since systematic observations began.
El Niño’s Escalating Strength
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon characterized by an abnormal rise in sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. It typically emerges every two to seven years and can last from nine to twelve months. Recent reports and analyses indicate the present El Niño is likely to intensify further in the coming months, following exceptional oceanic warming in the Pacific — a development signaling wide-ranging impacts on global weather patterns, including heavy rainfall and flooding in some areas, and severe drought and extreme heat in others.
The Washington Post cites updated climate modeling forecasts suggesting this El Niño could become the strongest ever recorded. These models project it may reach peak intensity this September and continue through next February. In the near term, Pacific sea surface temperatures are expected to rise more than 3°C above average.
The World Meteorological Organization confirms El Niño is now fully established and anticipates it will strengthen in the months ahead into a “very strong” event — one capable of broadly disrupting global precipitation and temperature patterns, and heightening risks of flooding, drought, and intense heat.
This El Niño is described in the report as a “climate time machine”: accelerating global warming in the short term and offering a preview of thermal conditions expected to become commonplace by the late 2030s.
Why 2027 Could Break the Heat Record
Dr. Nick Dunstone of the UK Met Office told the Independent that El Niño typically develops between March and June, peaking between November and February. However, the oceanic warming it triggers often exerts its strongest influence on global surface temperatures in the subsequent calendar year.
Based on this lag effect, Dunstone strongly expects 2027 to exceed 2024 as the hottest year ever recorded worldwide. He projects the annual global average temperature will temporarily surpass 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels — a threshold widely cited in climate policy frameworks.
Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the UK Met Office, emphasized the scale of the anomaly: while a typical El Niño raises sea surface temperatures by 1°C to 2°C, reaching even 2°C alone constitutes a “very large event.”
Global Weather Impacts and Regional Variability
The consequences of El Niño extend well beyond elevating the global mean temperature. The Independent notes the phenomenon is expected to generate highly irregular weather patterns across different world regions. Key anticipated regional effects include:
Over the longer term, researcher Mark Rolston warned that El Niño years — especially extreme cases — are generally followed by relatively cooler years. Such a cooling phase is anticipated after the exceptionally hot 2027.
Europe Under Pressure
Yet the prospect of cooler years later does not mitigate immediate heat risks — particularly for Europe. As the current El Niño escalates into one of the strongest ever documented, Bloomberg reports that meteorologists have already begun assessing what next summer may bring.
Although precise seasonal forecasting remains premature, the UK Met Office states 2027 is poised to rival 2024 as Europe’s hottest year on record. Even if that threshold is not crossed, climate change ensures future heatwaves will be longer, more intense, and more frequent than today’s benchmarks.
Beatrice Mosello, senior researcher at Chatham House, told Bloomberg that “heatwaves and wildfires have delivered direct evidence that people can no longer ignore.”
With these risks becoming increasingly visible, governments are beginning to assign greater priority to climate adaptation in policymaking. In Germany, Environment Minister Carsten Schneider is advancing constitutional amendments to expand the federal government’s formal responsibility for climate adaptation. In France, authorities announced increased funding for heat shelters and for air-conditioning installations in schools.
Yet Bloomberg notes these adaptation efforts confront tight national budgets and competing policy priorities — including voter discontent over inflation and political instability across Europe.
In this context, Emma Howard Boyd, chair of the UK’s National Heatwave Resilience Committee, urged governments to internalize the reality that ambient temperatures will continue rising. She stressed that heat risks must not be forgotten once summer ends and temperatures fall — so preparedness can improve meaningfully ahead of next year’s season.
