In the United States, numerous people report experiencing a sense of emptiness or hollowness, often described as loneliness, dissatisfaction, disconnection, depression, disquiet, or weariness. Despite maintaining their routines, life can feel like merely going through the motions.
This emptiness makes it difficult for individuals to genuinely care for others or themselves, as doing so demands focus and effort that may seem unattainable. The resulting internal echoes of thoughts and feelings can intensify loneliness.
Those who have faced addiction frequently recognize this hollow feeling. For some, the emptiness existed even before substance use began, with addiction providing a temporary escape from this sensation. Others may have once felt substantial but found their sense of self diminished over time due to their use, becoming mere shells of their former selves.
The hollowness can manifest as a dull ache or sharp pang, with individuals oscillating between these sensations. Despite attempts to fill this void, many efforts have only deepened the feeling of emptiness.

Although counterintuitive, paying attention to the thoughts, feelings, and sensations within this emptiness can reveal insights about oneself. Understanding the origins and triggers of these feelings can help identify ways to alleviate them and recognize moments of vulnerability.
Developing self-knowledge is essential for recovering from emptiness and for cultivating experiences, commitments, meanings, and values that support flourishing.
