Study Warns Overuse of AI May Reshape Human Speech Patterns
A new study in AI & Society introduces the concept of “Robotoid Humanness,” suggesting repeated AI interaction may gradually shift human communication toward clearer, more structured, and predictable forms optimized for machine comprehension.

Excessive use of artificial intelligence may alter how people speak—according to a newly published academic study. Researchers warn that frequent engagement with AI systems could prompt users to unconsciously adapt their language, tone, and self-presentation to better align with how machines process information.
What Is “Robotoid Humanness”?
The paper, published in the journal AI & Society, coins the term “Robotoid Humanness” to describe this potential shift. It does not imply humans will become literal robots. Rather, it refers to a possible behavioral adaptation: individuals may begin modifying their speech, conduct, and self-expression to be more explicit, organized, and easily interpretable by AI systems.
The study was authored by Selcen Ozturkcan of Linnaeus University, Jean-Paul de Cros Peronard of Aarhus University, and Inci Toral-Manson of the University of Birmingham.
How AI Interaction May Reshape Communication
According to the researchers, repeated interaction with AI can lead users over time to adjust how they communicate with such systems. For instance, someone regularly using an AI-powered customer service bot may observe that the system responds more accurately when messages are direct, unambiguous, and logically ordered. With repeated exposure, that user may begin applying the same style automatically during AI interactions.
This creates a feedback loop: AI learns from user inputs to refine its responses, while users, in turn, modify their communication based on how the system reacts.
Three Stages Toward Behavioral Adaptation
The paper outlines three sequential phases through which this dynamic may unfold. First, users may start perceiving AI not merely as a tool but as a social presence—especially given its capacity for conversation and contextual understanding.
In the second phase, the AI system uses data gathered from prior interactions to construct a simplified model of the user, enabling more tailored replies. In the third phase, the user themselves begins reshaping how they articulate ideas and present their identity—aligning it with what the AI appears best able to comprehend and respond to.
In essence, the human adapts to the machine just as the machine adapts to the human.
Could Spontaneity Erode?
The researchers highlight a key distinction between human-to-human and human-to-AI interaction. Humans may misunderstand, disagree, challenge assumptions, or behave unpredictably. AI systems, by contrast, rely heavily on pattern recognition, prediction, and personalization.
As users engage repeatedly with AI, they may grow more comfortable with communication styles that are clear, consistent, and machine-friendly—potentially reducing space for contradictions, spontaneity, and unexpected behavior, all of which are fundamental aspects of human interaction.
Still a Theoretical Concept
The authors stress that “Robotoid Humanness” remains a theoretical framework. They emphasize the need for further empirical research and testing to determine whether such behavioral shifts actually occur among people who frequently interact with AI in daily life.
Yet the study raises a pivotal question amid growing reliance on AI: if machines are learning to speak like humans, might humans—over time—begin speaking like machines?
