UNICEF warns El Niño to impact 347 million children
UNICEF reports that over 347 million children in 100 countries face severe weather conditions due to the El Niño phenomenon between October and December 2026.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has issued a warning stating that more than 347 million children will encounter harsh weather conditions as a result of the natural El Niño phenomenon. The organization specified that these minors, located across approximately 100 countries and territories, are expected to experience unusually dry or wet climates from October through December 2026.
Regional breakdown of affected children
The Asia-Pacific region faces the highest number of impacted youth, with 190 million children exposed to severe weather patterns. In southern and eastern Africa, another 41 million children are projected to confront similar atmospheric challenges. Additionally, UNICEF noted that 22 million children in Europe and Central Asia are also expected to feel the effects of the El Niño cycle.
Data indicates that roughly 1.1 billion children worldwide have already encountered droughts, heatwaves, or floods. According to the Los Angeles Times, this current iteration of El Niño is likely to become the strongest observed since 1950.
Mechanics and geographic impacts
El Niño is defined as a natural occurrence where sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean rise to abnormal levels. This thermal shift can lead to significant alterations in temperature patterns and precipitation distribution globally.
Brazil stands out as one of the most heavily affected regions. Northern areas and the Amazon basin are experiencing severe droughts and heatwaves, while southern parts of the country face heavy rainfall and flooding events.
