Barcelona Agree €10M Deal for Gabriel Jesus Amid Alvarez Bid Stalemate

Barcelona have reached a binding agreement to sign Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal for €10 million, with additional performance-based add-ons, according to transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano. The medical appointment is scheduled for Monday, and Jesus will travel to Catalonia after receiving formal permission from Arsenal.

Why Jesus emerged as the priority target

The pursuit of Jesus follows Barcelona’s unsuccessful attempt to acquire Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid. That bid was halted by Atlético’s firm refusal to sell. With Robert Lewandowski having departed, the club urgently needed a specialist centre-forward — a role Jesus is now set to fill.

Jesus’s contract with Arsenal runs until 2027. His limited playing time this season — behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in the Premier League champions’ pecking order — has accelerated his desire to leave. The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported he is now actively seeking an exit.

Medical clearance and career record

Barcelona conducted a thorough review of Jesus’s medical history after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in January 2025. The club confirmed he has completed a full recovery.

His goal-scoring output remains robust: 95 goals in 236 appearances for Manchester City between 2016 and 2022 under Pep Guardiola, followed by 33 goals in 123 matches for Arsenal from 2022 to 2026.

Contract terms and future options

Jesus will sign a two-year contract with Barcelona, running through 2027, with an option to extend for a further year until 2029. Romano stated the deal is finalized and no longer subject to negotiation.

Barcelona’s interest in Julián Álvarez remains active, though it is deferred to a future transfer window. The club has not withdrawn its long-term intention to pursue the Argentine forward.

Jesus first expressed ambition to join Barcelona during his tenure at Palmeiras, before moving to the Premier League in 2016.
