Carrick defends role amid Man Utd winless streak and camera concerns
Michael Carrick rejects doubts about his commitment as Manchester United remain winless in six games, while reports highlight dressing room unease over documentary filming.

Pressure mounts on Michael Carrick after Manchester United’s winless run extended to six matches following a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road. The Red Devils currently sit in 13th place in the Premier League, having secured only one victory in seven league encounters this campaign.
Carrick addresses management doubts
The 45-year-old manager firmly rejected suggestions that he was reluctant to return to coaching before accepting the Old Trafford position. This response followed comments from club legend Nicky Butt, who claimed Carrick had previously expressed hesitation about management duties.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Butt recalled a conversation prior to Carrick’s appointment: “He went, ‘No it's not for me, it's too much. My head's all over the show. I'd only do it for the big job.’ The big job is Man United.”
Carrick dismissed these assertions during a press conference, stating: “I definitely wouldn't be here if that was the case, would I? At this stage. It's the best job I could possibly have. It's the best role I could possibly have. I feel a real privilege of being in this position and a real responsibility, but equally a drive of wanting to make a difference and having success here.”
Documentary filming impacts squad
Reports indicate that players are concerned about the influence of Amazon Prime’s All or Nothing series on their performance. The docuseries, which has previously featured Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur, is currently filming at Manchester United.
The Sun reported that underperforming stars worry the presence of cameras is altering internal dynamics, with claims that “punches are being pulled” during dressing room debriefs. Carrick addressed the issue in August, noting: “That's been fine. It's obviously a little bit new, and unique, but the actual day-to-day workings of it, we have that many cameras around anyway that the boys are kind of half-used to it.”
He added that the crew has been respectful and that the situation “probably seems bigger from the outside than it is day-to-day when we're working in it.”
Neville warns of January deadline
Gary Neville cautioned that Carrick faces a serious threat to his tenure if the team remains in the bottom half of the table by January. Following the draw with Leeds, where Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 35th minute before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalized in the 51st, Neville analyzed the current state of the squad.
On The Gary Neville Podcast, the Sky Sports pundit observed: “[There's] a depressed standard and a low expectation right now. But it'll feel like a stepping stone for Michael Carrick, and it'll feel like the first step on the ladder in the Premier League.”
Neville suggested potential tactical adjustments, such as bringing Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford off the bench to improve solidity. He emphasized that finishing fifth is essential for Carrick’s growth and the club’s investment strategy.
“If they're 13th in January, he's got a problem because then you are what you are, whereas I think it's still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, 'Okay, still early in the season'; you can't say that after 15 games,” Neville stated. He highlighted upcoming fixtures against Bournemouth and Chelsea as critical periods for change.
