Portugal faces significant economic risks if Cristiano Ronaldo retires from international duty, with Forbes estimating 30-35% of national team profits are linked to his commercial appeal.

The expected decision by Al-Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo to retire from international football with Portugal is anticipated to have negative economic impacts on his country.
During the last FIFA international break, Cristiano Ronaldo left his national team camp after a 2-1 victory over Norway in the second round of the UEFA Nations League.
Ronaldo's departure was due to disagreements with Jorge Jesus, the coach of the Portuguese national team, regarding the player not being given playing time against Erling Haaland's teammates.
Since then, things have not returned to normal for The Don, who decided to leave his national team camp while Coach Jesus insisted that The Don adhere to his instructions to participate in matches during the upcoming period.
The Economic Impact of Ronaldo's Retirement
In light of Ronaldo's insistence on not extinguishing the flames of his dispute with Jesus, the option of international retirement, similar to Lionel Messi in Argentina, remains highly probable.
For its part, global magazine "Forbes" revealed an economic reality about the Portuguese national team indicating that between 30 and 35% of Portugal's profit margins are directly and indirectly linked to The Don's commercial attractiveness.
This percentage is based on sponsorship deals, product and merchandise sales, and the general attractiveness of the national team to global audiences.
Portuguese newspaper "Record" expects that if the veteran striker officially ends his international career, long-term commercial revenues for the Portuguese Football Federation could drop by up to 50%, proving that Ronaldo's impact far exceeds his technical contributions on the pitch.
Manuel Castro Almeida, the Portuguese Minister of Economy, recently highlighted Ronaldo's impact, describing him as "the biggest company promoting Portugal's reputation globally."
Almeida spoke in statements reported by the global website "Goal" in this regard, saying: "Cristiano Ronaldo has a tremendous influence in promoting and highlighting Portugal's image; many people do not know Portugal except thanks to Ronaldo. From the perspective of enhancing Portugal's image and reputation, Cristiano represents extremely important value, and it would be very beneficial for Portugal to continue leveraging these potentialities."
Public Pressure
Alongside financial concerns, the Portuguese Football Federation faces immense pressure from local and international fans; a segment of supporters believes that Ronaldo's potential departure - amidst the current UEFA Nations League competitions - represents treatment unworthy of a player who made the greatest contributions in the history of Portuguese football.
This viewpoint has been supported by global football stars, such as Luis Figo, a legend of Portugal, and even those from outside like Rasmus Højlund, the Danish striker, who refused to shake hands with Jesus and even pushed him in the chest following the match between the two countries which The Don missed.
Achieving reconciliation between Ronaldo, the Portuguese Federation, and coach Jorge Jesus is essential to resolving this issue positively.
However, the tense relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus makes the possibility of the star striker returning to the national team ranks largely uncertain, although organizing a farewell match remains another expected scenario.
Jesus himself confirmed, despite the deterioration of his recent relationship with The Don, that matches for Portugal without The Don would be attended by 5,000 spectators instead of 85,000 due to the overwhelming popularity of the number 7 owner.
For his part, Daniel Sá, Executive Director of the Portuguese Institute for Marketing Management, stated in comments to the Portuguese news agency "Lusa" that: "The Don's departure from the national team would be a tragedy, because from a brand perspective, Ronaldo is incomparably larger than the entire Portuguese national team and countless other entities combined."
He added: "Ronaldo is the one who enabled them to sign numerous contracts and earn huge amounts of money over more than 20 years."
Ronaldo's fans, who exceed one billion people, and the brands that support the federation thanks to the veteran winger, will need to renegotiate contracts or terminate them completely.
It is worth noting that Ronaldo has played 234 international matches for Portugal, scoring 146 goals, and achieved European titles with them, including Euro 2016 for the first time in their history, along with the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and then 2025.
