Julio Maldonado, the Movistar Plus analyst widely known as "Maldini," expressed confidence in the officiating standards during the La Liga clash between Real Madrid and Sevilla. The match concluded with a 4-1 victory for Los Blancos. Speaking on his YouTube channel, as reported by Newspaper Sport, Maldini highlighted the exceptional quality of goals scored during the fixture.

Referee integrity and VAR trust

Maldini addressed the contentious incident involving Arda Güler’s alleged hand strike against Piqué. While acknowledging that Sevilla had legitimate grounds for anger, he stated that available footage did not clearly depict an assault or a push severe enough to justify a red card. He emphasized that among the images accessible to the officials, no clear evidence was visible to settle the matter definitively.

"I always trust in the integrity of the referees and in VAR," Maldini said. "And so I understand that they did not see footage that was clear enough." He admitted uncertainty regarding the event, noting that while Sevilla players on the pitch may have witnessed the interaction, he could not take a definitive stance based on the visual evidence provided to the authorities.

Tactical endorsements and player praise

The analyst supported Jose Mourinho’s strategic adjustments, specifically advocating for Endrick’s inclusion from the start, Güler’s shift back into midfield, and Federico Valverde operating as right back. Although Valverde does not prefer this position, Maldini argued he should be Real Madrid’s first-choice option there.

Maldini reserved his highest praise for Diomande, suggesting the player earned a starting role through his performance. He noted that beyond scoring a wonderful goal, Diomande assisted Güler’s strike—a contribution Maldini described as more than just a pass. The analyst also commended Diomande’s defensive efforts, observing that he effectively functioned as a second fullback while Güler moved centrally.

This level of output places pressure on Vinicius Junior. "The comparison with the Brazilian winger is unavoidable," Maldini observed. "Vinicius knows that if he does not deliver what Diomande delivered, he will not have chances to play. That is the truth."

Impact on title race dynamics

Maldini characterized the win as crucial for Mourinho’s side, particularly given Barcelona’s refusal to drop points. He assessed that Real Madrid displayed both strong and weak elements against a competitive Sevilla team. Looking ahead, the analyst suggested that the upcoming Clasico "may determine the future of the title race for both teams."
