The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to begin in a few days, marking the first time the tournament will feature 48 teams. This exceptional edition will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, generating worldwide anticipation for what is expected to be the largest and most thrilling World Cup in history.

The World Cup's history reflects the grandeur of football, with its significance extending beyond titles to include record achievements that have immortalized legendary players across generations. At the forefront of the list for the most victories in World Cup matches stands German star Miroslav Klose, who secured 17 wins out of 24 games played, achieving a winning rate of 0.71 per match, underscoring his prominent role in German football history.

Klose’s World Cup journey began in 2002, where he earned five wins and helped Germany reach the final. He nearly matched this tally in the 2006 tournament, which concluded with Germany finishing third. He continued his strong presence in 2010 by adding three more wins, culminating in the historic 2014 World Cup where he contributed four victories and secured his career’s crowning achievement with the global title.

Following Klose, Brazilian legend Cafu ranks second with 16 wins from 20 World Cup matches, boasting a high win percentage of 0.80. Cafu played a key role during one of Brazil’s strongest eras, participating in three different World Cup generations. He began by winning the 1994 title, reached the final in 1998, and achieved his greatest success in 2002 by leading Brazil to their fifth World Cup title with seven wins. He later added three wins during his final World Cup appearance in 2006.

Argentine star Lionel Messi, winner of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, shares the second spot with 16 wins out of 26 matches. His World Cup career started in 2006 with two victories, followed by four wins in 2010, and five in 2014 when Argentina reached the final. He had a challenging 2018 tournament with one win but reached the pinnacle of his career in 2022 by securing four wins and the championship with Argentina.

The next tier includes several prominent players each with 15 World Cup victories. Among them is German Wolfgang Overath, a key figure in West Germany’s golden generation, who played 19 matches and won the 1974 World Cup, also finishing as runner-up in 1966 and third in 1970. Brazilian star Ronaldo Nazário also achieved 15 wins in 19 matches and was the undisputed hero of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup triumph with his exceptional attacking performance.

German players Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger are also part of this group, each recording 15 wins in 20 matches and contributing to Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory, with consistent appearances in the 2006 and 2010 editions. Legendary German Lothar Matthäus, one of the most influential players in World Cup history, also amassed 15 wins, reinforcing Germany’s dominance in the tournament’s historical records.

Following them is a large group of players with 14 wins each, including Brazilian Lucio, German Franz Beckenbauer, French players Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann, German Per Mertesacker, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and Italian Paolo Maldini.

These statistics clearly demonstrate the historical dominance of Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and France in World Cup records, reflecting their consistent progression to advanced stages and persistent competition for titles. This sustained success has kept their names prominently featured among the tournament’s all-time statistical leaders.
