Mourinho mocks Tebas: No excuse unless clinically ill
José Mourinho sharply criticized La Liga president Javier Tebas, stating only clinical illness could justify his actions amid the Real Madrid dispute.

José Mourinho, the Portuguese manager of Real Madrid, launched a scathing verbal attack on Javier Tebas, the president of the Spanish football league. The remarks occurred during a press conference ahead of Sunday’s La Liga match against Sevilla, where Mourinho refused to detail the ongoing conflict but delivered a pointed message regarding Tebas’ conduct.
The manager's sharp rebuke
When asked for his opinion on the league chief, Mourinho stated that there are limits to acceptable behavior. He asserted that no excuses exist for Tebas’ actions unless the situation is medically pathological. "I do not want to talk about this matter, as there are boundaries," Mourinho said, according to reports from Spanish newspaper AS. "Excuses can only be offered if the condition is clinically ill; otherwise, there are no excuses. I do not wish to enter into this subject."
Mourinho emphasized that Real Madrid supporters understand the challenges facing their team. He urged that the dispute remain contained within Spain rather than spreading internationally. Citing the global standing of La Liga and the status of current world champions, he argued it would be preferable to keep such matters domestic and avoid exporting them abroad.
Origins of the controversy
Tensions between Real Madrid and Tebas escalated significantly on Friday, with both sides exchanging harsh public statements. The deadlock appears entrenched following comments by the league president comparing the editorial approach of Real Madrid TV to propaganda mechanisms used by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi regime’s minister of propaganda. Tebas alleged that the club’s channel consistently portrays Real Madrid as a victim, repeats grievances, fuels suspicion, and selectively curates events to support its narrative.
In a social media post, Tebas clarified that his comparison targeted propaganda techniques rather than Nazi ideology or the club’s fanbase. He described these methods as involving systematic repetition, framing opponents as enemies, and subordinating facts to a predetermined storyline. This explanation did not mitigate the reaction from Real Madrid’s management.
Club demands resignation
Real Madrid officials expressed outrage at the analogy, demanding Tebas’ immediate resignation from his roles as La Liga president and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The club labeled him a "real plague" on Spanish football. In an official statement, they deemed the comparison of their channel’s methods to Nazi propaganda dangerous and unacceptable. They further noted that Tebas’ subsequent clarification regarding ideology did not lessen the offensive nature of his initial remarks.
Tebas defended his position by referencing past comments from Florentino Pérez, the Real Madrid president, who claimed he could have won 14 league titles had others not been stolen from him. These statements were followed by complaints regarding certain referees. Tebas questioned the standards applied to evaluate speech, asking whether claims of title theft are treated as freedom of expression while criticism of propaganda styles—excluding ideological comparisons and targeting fans—invites potential official intervention.
He stressed the necessity for consistent and independent application of standards. "Freedom of expression should not depend on the name of the speaker," Tebas concluded.
