Quinton Fortune suggests signing Haaland and four others from City
Former Manchester United player Quinton Fortune has advised INEOS to pursue five Manchester City players, including Erling Haaland, should the club's financial fair play appeal fail.

Manchester United co-owners INEOS have been advised by former player Quinton Fortune to consider signing five key Manchester City figures, with striker Erling Haaland identified as a primary target. This recommendation comes amid uncertainty surrounding the Cityzens’ ongoing appeal against their guilty verdict for Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches.
Potential sanctions and transfer implications
An Independent Commission determined that Manchester City violated FFP regulations between 2009 and 2018. The Premier League side has filed an appeal, maintaining their innocence throughout the process. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the club faces significant penalties, which could include heavy fines, point deductions, transfer bans, or expulsion from the league. There is also a possibility that titles won during the specified period could be stripped.
Fortune suggests that if relegation occurs and players begin departing the Etihad Stadium, Manchester United should attempt to secure Haaland’s signature. Beyond the Norwegian international, Fortune believes Nico O’Reilly, Rayan Cherki, Marc Guehi, and Elliot Anderson would strengthen manager Michael Carrick’s squad. However, he noted that England attacker Phil Foden, described as a "die-hard City fan," would not make such a move.
Fortune’s assessment of available talent
In comments made to BOYLE Sports, Fortune acknowledged the potential backlash from United supporters regarding direct transfers from rivals. Despite this, he highlighted the quality of specific players. He praised Nico O’Reilly’s versatility at left-back, noting his ability to cover center-back and midfield roles similar to John O’Shea. Fortune also commended Rayan Cherki’s unique ball control skills.
Regarding defensive options, Fortune stated that Marc Guehi would be a valuable addition at centre-back. He also pointed to Elliot Anderson’s value, referencing the cost incurred by Manchester City to acquire him. Concluding his list, Fortune remarked on the surprise of mentioning other names before Haaland, suggesting several viable options remain available if the situation develops.
Reaction to unprecedented legal proceedings
Fortune reflected on the scale of the FFP case while traveling, expressing bewilderment at how long the alleged breaches went undetected. He characterized the upcoming decision by the Premier League as unprecedented in football history, comparing the situation to a movie plot. Addressing the hypothetical scenario of Manchester United receiving the 2017/18 title due to City’s sanctions, Fortune stated he would reject any medal awarded under those circumstances, arguing it would not feel right if the competition was not won fairly.
