Ronaldinho honors Messi's 126-goal international career after Benin victory
Brazilian legend Ronaldinho paid tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentine captain's retirement from international football after a final match against Benin.

Lionel Messi concluded his 21-year tenure with the Argentine national team by leading La Albiceleste to a 3-0 win over Benin at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The Brazilian former Barcelona teammate, Ronaldinho, publicly celebrated the forward’s legacy and personal journey immediately after the match.
The final international performance
Messi, aged 39, delivered a decisive display in his last appearance for his country. He provided two assists before converting a penalty kick in the 71st minute against the 93rd-ranked opposition. This goal marked the 126th of his international career, capping off a period that began with his announcement to step away from the squad in August.
The victory served as a monumental send-off, prompting widespread reactions from the global football community. Among those acknowledging the milestone was Ronaldinho, who used social media platforms to address his former protégé directly.
Ronaldinho’s message to Messi
Ronaldinho, who mentored Messi during the Argentine’s early years at Camp Nou, expressed deep pride in his colleague’s achievements. "What a pleasure and what a joy it has been to have been part of your story from day one, brother," he wrote. He emphasized that Messi’s name is permanently etched into the history of both Argentina and world football.
The 2002 World Cup winner also referenced the shared experience of representing their nations. "Only we know the joy we felt when we fulfilled our childhood dream, representing our entire nation and becoming world champions," Ronaldinho stated. He noted that Messi gave everything for his national team and country throughout his career.
Acknowledging the pressures inherent in elite football, Ronaldinho offered advice focused on personal well-being. "I understand you perfectly, and I know that everything to do with family makes us rethink things. Enjoy life, brother. I wish you all the best, today and always," he added.
Messi’s emotional farewell
Following the final whistle, Messi addressed the crowd at Estadio Monumental with visible emotion. The Inter Miami player dedicated his final match to his late father, Jorge, who died in August at age 68. "It's a lot of emotions. Obviously the first thing I think about is my dad," Messi told supporters.
He reflected on his two decades wearing the national shirt, stating, "All that's left for me to do is say thank you. It's meant so much to me to wear this shirt for 20 years. I never stopped striving, fighting, or wanting to be here." Messi described the moment as difficult, noting that not returning would bring great sorrow, though playing in Argentina remained the most wonderful aspect of his career.
Shift to club commitments
With international duties now complete, Messi will focus exclusively on his role at Inter Miami. Stepping back from the international calendar allows the 2022 World Cup champion and two-time Copa America winner to manage physical demands more effectively. As highlighted in Ronaldinho’s tribute, this transition provides Messi additional time for family as he continues his professional playing days.
