Eulalia Marzetti died on Tuesday in Pujato, Santa Fe province, at the age of 74. Her son, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, immediately traveled from his base in Spain back to South America to attend the private wake.

Nationwide mourning measures announced

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) issued bulletin no. 6966 on Wednesday, detailing official tribute protocols across all domestic divisions. Flags will fly at half-mast, including at the Lionel Messi training complex, while pre-match silences are scheduled for every category.

A minute’s silence will observe matchday 15 of the Primera Division’s Torneo Clausura and major lower-tier fixtures this weekend. These actions aim to support the World Cup-winning manager and his family during their period of mourning.

Official condolences from governing bodies

AFA President Claudio Tapia led the formal message of support, stating: "The entire Argentine Football Association... sends its condolences to our manager Lionel Scaloni and his family on the passing of his mother, Eulalia Marzetti." The statement added, "A fraternal embrace from all Argentines to El Gringo and his loved ones during this difficult time. Wishing you strength!"

The Argentine Professional Football League (LPF) also released a statement expressing deep regret over Marzetti’s passing. "The entire country stands with you and your family, Lionel!" the LPF declared.

Health struggles influenced career decisions

Marzetti had battled a serious illness since 2021. This personal ordeal previously caused Scaloni to consider resigning from his national team post to spend more time by her side.

He first disclosed these health challenges publicly during a press conference for the South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. At that time, he admitted, "I'm in no place to think about the World Cup right now."

Following this disclosure, Scaloni dedicated Argentina’s 2021 Copa America victory to his mother. That triumph marked the first major silverware of a tenure that later included the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 World Cup, and the 2024 Copa America.

Coach resumes duties in November

While clubs pay respects on the pitch, the 48-year-old Scaloni will privately spend time with his loved ones in Santa Fe. He is expected to resume his national team responsibilities ahead of the November international window.
