The University of Buenos Aires will award Lionel Messi its highest honorary degree, Doctor Honoris Causa, during his farewell match against Benin.

The University of Buenos Aires has decided to confer the title of Doctor Honoris Causa upon Argentine football star Lionel Messi. This distinction represents the highest honorary degree awarded by the institution.
The university’s Supreme Council unanimously approved the honor, citing Messi’s athletic career and his role in representing Argentina. The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, just hours before his final match with the national team against Benin at the Monumental stadium.
In its justification, the university stated that Messi’s trajectory exemplifies "excellence, perseverance, humility, and ethical practice." The institution noted these are values it actively promotes, alongside Messi’s commitment to representing his country.
Ricardo Gelpi, the university president, explained that the recognition extends beyond on-field achievements. He described Messi as a "ambassador of popular culture and national identity" within Argentina.
The university highlighted specific milestones in Messi’s international career, including victories in Copa America 2021, Finalissima 2022, the 2022 World Cup, and Copa America 2024. It also referenced the team's runner-up finish in the 2026 World Cup.
This academic honor coincides with the anticipated match against Benin, which marks Messi’s departure from the Argentine national team after more than two decades since his debut in the Albiceleste jersey.
According to the Argentine News Agency, Messi enters this fixture holding several national records. He remains the all-time top scorer with 125 goals and holds the record for assists with 68. Additionally, he has played 207 matches wearing the Argentina kit.
