The 4-7-8 method: A simple breathing hack for instant sleep
A GP and sleep expert details five methods, including the 4-7-8 breathing technique and reverse psychology, to help individuals fall asleep more quickly.

Five distinct strategies designed to accelerate the onset of sleep have been detailed by Dr Deborah Lee. The general practitioner and sleep specialist, affiliated with Doctor Fox in collaboration with Comfybedss, outlined these unconventional approaches to assist those struggling with insomnia.
The 4-7-8 breathing technique
One recommended method involves a specific rhythmic breathing pattern. Dr Lee instructs users to place their tongue against the roof of the mouth and exhale through the mouth, noting that this may produce an unusual sound as part of the process. Following this initial step, the individual should close their mouth and inhale through the nose for four seconds.
The next phase requires holding the breath for seven seconds. After completing the four-second inhale and seven-second hold, the user must exhale through the mouth for eight seconds. This cycle is repeated until the person falls asleep.
Reverse psychology application
Another tactic utilizes psychological counter-intuition. Dr Lee explains that constantly telling oneself to sleep can generate stress and anger regarding the inability to do so. Instead, she suggests doing the opposite by repeatedly thinking the phrase "do not fall asleep" internally.
This approach aims to reduce performance anxiety around sleeping. According to the doctor, eye muscles will eventually tire out, leading to sleep before the individual realizes it has happened.
Single nostril breathing
Lying on one side while breathing exclusively through the left nostril is another proposed method. By using a finger to cover the right nostril, Dr Lee states that this action may lower blood pressure and calm the body in preparation for bedtime.
The doctor notes that this technique should begin to make the user feel drowsier, facilitating a quicker transition into sleep.
Mental recitation of daily events
Occupying the mind with detailed recall of the day’s events in reverse order serves as a distraction from anxious thoughts. Dr Lee advises starting with what was watched on television before bed and working backward through the day.
The mental exercise includes recalling breakfast, lunch, dinner, work activities, and music listened to during the commute. This process continues back to the moment of waking up, keeping the mind engaged and preventing focus on reasons for staying awake.
Toe tension exercises
A physical technique involving the feet is also recommended. Dr Lee suggests tensing the toes for ten seconds, followed by relaxing them for ten seconds. This sequence should be repeated until fatigue sets in.
The purpose of this exercise is to draw tension away from other parts of the body, promoting overall relaxation conducive to sleep.
