Irina Nikolina, a nutrition expert, states that body scent is not determined solely by personal hygiene, air temperature, or sweat volume. Instead, it reflects various internal physiological processes. She advises consulting a specialist if one’s usual body odor changes and the shift persists for an extended period.

What Causes Unusual Body Scents?

Nikolina clarifies that sweat itself is odorless. The characteristic smell arises from the interaction between sweat components and bacteria on the skin surface. If an unfamiliar scent appears suddenly and lasts for a long time, she recommends checking for other health issues and assessing the body’s condition.

A sour smell may result from chronic acidity or consuming large amounts of processed and unhealthy foods. In such cases, reviewing the diet is advised. Conversely, a sweet scent warrants checking blood sugar levels, as these changes can occur during carbohydrate metabolism disorders, including high glucose. If this odor appears suddenly, testing is recommended.

Persistent ammonia-like smells are often linked to excessive protein intake and insufficient fluid consumption. Increasing water intake should be the first step. If unpleasant armpit odor remains even after showering, the body might be overloaded with toxins and attempting to eliminate them through sweat. Attention to diet and fasting as a preventive measure are suggested.

Organ Function and Gut Health Indicators

A fishy odor requires examination of liver and kidney function. Additionally, an increase in the intensity of normal body scent may point to intestinal problems, since digestive system changes affect the skin and overall health. Stronger or more bothersome foot odor could stem from gut microbiota imbalances or candidiasis. Personal care products alone cannot hide these symptoms; identifying the root cause is essential.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Advice

Nikolina emphasizes that body odor is just one indicator and should be addressed comprehensively. This involves thorough examinations to assess general health, including nutrition, digestive function, metabolism, sleep patterns, and stress levels. Gentle therapeutic methods may be added alongside diagnosis and treatment, as determined by a specialist.

However, immediate medical consultation is necessary if symptoms persist for more than a few days or are accompanied by thirst, weakness, weight changes, or abdominal pain.
