Bruxism: A Medical Signal, Not Just a Habit
Dental specialist Yana Diachkina explains that sleep bruxism indicates underlying bodily issues and requires comprehensive medical intervention.

Dental specialist Yana Diachkina emphasizes that grinding teeth during sleep is not merely a habit but potentially a sign of systemic dysfunction. She notes that this condition is widespread, with some individuals becoming aware of it themselves while others discover the issue when waking to the sounds produced by their bed partners.
Underlying Causes of Teeth Grinding
According to Diachkina, bruxism results from involuntary pressure on the teeth. Over years, this mechanical stress can erode tooth enamel, trigger headaches, and disrupt restful sleep. The condition often manifests as a symptom of excessive tension in the chewing muscles, malocclusion, temporomandibular joint disorders, stress, anxiety, or sleep disturbances. In certain cases, weight gain or respiratory problems may also contribute to the phenomenon.
Consequences of Ignoring Symptoms
"The body often attempts to alert an individual to a problem," Diachkina states. "If ignored, consequences accumulate, ranging from enamel erosion and fractures to increased tooth sensitivity, jaw pain, headaches, and sleep disorders." Consequently, she advises against neglecting the issue, urging patients to consult a dentist specialized in treating bruxism rather than dismissing it as a personal flaw or a condition to simply endure.
Comprehensive Treatment Approaches
Treatment for this condition typically requires a multidisciplinary approach. Patients may need consultations with osteopaths, neurologists, and occasionally psychotherapists or psychiatrists. While mouth guards (splints) help protect teeth, they do not always address the root cause. Therefore, physicians select appropriate therapies based on each patient's specific characteristics, noting that effective treatment is often long-term and necessitates lifestyle modifications.
Diachkina recommends avoiding delays in consulting specialists who treat temporomandibular joint disorders and bruxism. She asserts that early professional intervention represents the best method for preserving dental and joint health while improving overall sleep quality.
