Daily Fruit Juice or Smoothie Intake Improves Mental Health and Reduces Depression Symptoms
A Newcastle University study found that consuming fruit juice or smoothies daily enhances mental health and lowers depression symptoms in adults with low fruit and vegetable intake.

Researchers from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom conducted a study revealing that daily consumption of fruit juice or smoothies can improve mental health and decrease symptoms of depression.
The study involved 42 adult participants whose dietary habits were characterized by low consumption of fruits and vegetables. The researchers assisted these individuals in increasing their daily servings of these foods to reach the recommended amount of five servings per day. Additionally, a subset of participants was instructed to drink one cup of natural fruit juice or smoothie every day.
After a monitoring period of four weeks, the researchers observed that those who consumed fruit juice or smoothies daily exhibited improved mental health and a significant reduction in depression indicators compared to the other group. The difference measured was 2.52 points on the depression symptom rating scale.
The study also noted no adverse effects of the beverages on participants' metabolism or blood sugar levels during the trial.
The study authors suggest that making simple dietary changes can serve as an accessible and cost-effective method to enhance mental health. They emphasized that drinking juices and smoothies might facilitate achieving the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, especially for individuals who struggle to maintain a healthy diet.
