Dr. Olga Titarinko explained that calf muscle cramps occur due to a disruption in the muscle contraction and relaxation mechanism, which causes blood vessels to constrict and reduces oxygen supply to the tissues.

She noted that in most cases, these cramps are benign and often result from fatigue, dehydration, or pregnancy. However, she emphasized warning signs that require medical consultation, such as frequent nighttime episodes, severe swelling, redness, or numbness in the leg.

For quick relief from a calf muscle cramp, Dr. Titarinko recommends sitting down, extending the leg, and pulling the toes firmly toward the body. This action stimulates the muscle’s natural relaxation mechanism. Following this, she advises massaging the cramped muscle firmly from bottom to top and applying warm compresses to help restore blood flow more quickly.

To prevent cramps, she suggests performing stretching exercises before bedtime and maintaining regular stretching, especially for those whose work involves prolonged sitting. Keeping the body well hydrated is also important. Additionally, she recommends using medical insoles for individuals with flat feet and avoiding heavy covers pressing on the feet during sleep.

Dr. Titarinko highlighted the importance for people with diabetes, varicose veins, kidney failure, or thyroid disorders to pay special attention to foot health.

She also advised undergoing basic tests to check electrolyte levels, blood sugar, and hormones. If no improvement occurs within two weeks, patients should promptly consult a specialist.
