Historically, mint has been used in traditional medicine to soothe digestive disorders. Much of its effect is attributed to menthol, which produces its characteristic cooling sensation. Additionally, mint contains plant compounds such as polyphenols, recognized for their antioxidant properties.
Certified nutritionist Nicola Ludlam-Raine explains that although mint is typically used in small amounts, it offers significant benefits. It adds a unique flavor to food without contributing notable calories, making it a suitable alternative to excessive salt or sugar usage.

There are hundreds of mint varieties, but spearmint and peppermint are the most commonly used. This explains its frequent use in toothpaste, chewing gum, digestive aids, and herbal teas.

Mint tea is a popular beverage consumed after heavy meals, as menthol helps relax intestinal muscles. This relaxation may alleviate cramps, bloating, and abdominal pain.
A scientific review conducted by researchers at Western Ontario University found that peppermint oil was more effective than a placebo in reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Ludlam-Raine notes that most studies focus on concentrated peppermint oil rather than fresh mint leaves, but many individuals report noticeable relief after consuming mint following meals.
Stress Relief and Enhanced Focus
Recent studies suggest that menthol may also calm the nervous system and promote relaxation. A 2022 study involving emergency department patients showed that those who inhaled peppermint oil experienced reduced anxiety levels compared to those who did not.
Other research indicates peppermint oil might improve alertness, decrease fatigue, support sleep quality, and enhance mood. However, these findings do not replace the need for medical treatment when necessary.
Oral Health Benefits Beyond Fresh Breath
Mint has long been associated with oral care products, but its role extends beyond freshening breath. A 2024 study revealed that a blend of oils from various mint types helped reduce bacteria linked to bad breath and gum disease while preserving beneficial bacteria.
Chewing fresh mint leaves stimulates saliva production and exposes the mouth to natural antimicrobial compounds, making it a preferable option over sweetened mint candies, which may increase the risk of tooth decay.
Who Should Avoid Mint?
Fresh mint is safe for most people, but concentrated preparations like peppermint oil capsules might not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease may experience worsened symptoms since mint can relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus, allowing stomach acids to reflux.
Patients with gallstones or gallbladder issues are advised to consult a physician before using concentrated mint products, as these may affect bile flow and potentially interact with certain medications.
