The death of a young woman from plague in the Irkutsk region of Siberia has sparked concern, coinciding with local media reports that numerous individuals have been placed under quarantine following suspected contact with her. The deceased was identified by domestic outlets as Daria Shchipilova, a 28-year-old laboratory technician employed at the Irkutsk Plague Control Institute.

Suspected infection source and isolation measures

According to the news website "People of Baikal," the woman may have contracted pneumonic plague while working, suggesting the infection occurred after a test tube broke inside the laboratory. The site reported that up to 200 people who potentially interacted with Shchipilova were placed under quarantine, though no further details regarding their medical status or the duration of the isolation were disclosed.

The Russian Ministry of Health did not issue an immediate statement clarifying the circumstances of the incident. Additionally, AFP was unable to independently verify all the details provided by local media sources. Earlier, Alexei Tsydenov, the governor of the neighboring Buryatia region, announced via social media that a woman had died from plague in the adjacent Irkutsk area.

WHO classification of pneumonic plague risks

Questions remain regarding the exact source of the infection, the total number of contacts, and the specific health measures implemented, pending more detailed official information from Russian authorities. The World Health Organization states that pneumonic plague is one of the most infectious forms of the disease and can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated early.
