A Korean study links consistent sleep and exercise patterns to better blood sugar management in patients.

Researchers at Korea University College of Medicine found that adhering to a strict daily routine may enhance blood glucose regulation for individuals with type 2 diabetes who rely on insulin. The investigation highlights the critical role of sleep, physical activity, and circadian rhythm consistency in managing the condition.
The research involved monitoring 122 patients over a ten-day period. Scientists utilized continuous glucose monitors alongside devices tracking physical activity and fitness levels. Data collected included sleep duration, heart rate metrics, and the degree of regularity in participants' biological rhythms.
Results indicated a significant correlation between routine consistency and glycemic control. Patients with the most regular biological rhythms maintained blood sugar levels within the target range 46.3% of the time. In contrast, those with less consistent daily habits achieved this target only 20% of the time, suggesting that stable daily patterns are linked to improved glucose management.
The study observed that engaging in physical activity between noon and 6 p.m. was associated with better blood sugar control. During these hours, more active patients spent extended periods within the target glucose range and experienced fewer fluctuations compared to their less active counterparts.
Adequate sleep duration correlated with greater stability in blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of hypoglycemia. This finding reinforces the importance of incorporating sufficient rest into daily habits when managing diabetes.
These outcomes suggest that regulating sleep and wake times, along with maintaining consistent physical activity, can serve as supportive factors alongside pharmacological treatment for type 2 diabetes. Previous scientific evidence supports these observations, noting that regular exercise improves the body's sensitivity to insulin, thereby helping to regulate blood sugar levels while supporting overall health and bodily functions.
