Research reveals that legumes benefit men's heart health, while cruciferous vegetables are more advantageous for women, suggesting tailored dietary advice.

A recent scientific study indicates that the cardiovascular benefits of vegetables may vary between men and women, suggesting the need for more precise dietary recommendations that consider biological differences between the sexes.
Researchers from Australia analyzed the dietary patterns of over 600 young men and women, uncovering distinct differences in how various types of vegetables affect cardiovascular health indicators.
The study, published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, found that men who consumed higher amounts of legumes—including beans, lentils, and peas—showed a lower likelihood of early signs of heart disease. These signs included elevated blood pressure, increased waist circumference, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and raised blood sugar.
Conversely, women gained the most benefit from eating cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Their consumption was linked to reduced early risk markers for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
The researchers noted that consuming one daily serving of the appropriate vegetable type corresponded with a significant reduction in health risks, even among individuals in their early twenties.
Therese O’Sullivan, a researcher at the Institute for Innovation in Nutrition and Health at Edith Cowan University in Australia, explained that the findings suggest men and women may metabolize certain nutrients and plant compounds in vegetables differently.
She added that compounds found in legumes might have a stronger effect on testosterone levels in men, while those in cruciferous vegetables could more significantly influence female hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
The research team emphasized that further studies are necessary to confirm these results. However, they pointed out that legumes and cruciferous vegetables are affordable and easy to incorporate into daily diets, potentially contributing to improved heart health and chronic disease prevention.
