Berri on the End of UNIFIL's Mission: A Sin, and Israel is the Cause
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri warns that ending UNIFIL's mandate without a replacement constitutes a sin targeting international legitimacy, blaming Israel for the crisis.

Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri received European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and her accompanying delegation at the Second Presidency in Ain el-Tineh. The meeting was attended by EU Ambassador to Lebanon Sandra de Walle and Berri’s media advisor Ali Hamdan. They discussed general conditions in Lebanon and the region, as well as political and security developments in light of Israel’s continued violations of the ceasefire agreement and daily attacks on southern villages and towns. The talks also covered relations between Lebanon and EU countries, and the role the Union can play in assisting Lebanon in various fields, particularly in reconstruction efforts and supporting Lebanon’s insistence on maintaining the presence of the UNIFIL force.
Berri renewed his warning against "the danger of reaching a stage where the mandate of the International Emergency Force ends without finding a substitute under the UN umbrella," noting that "reaching such a sin targets international legitimacy and its resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 1701, and it also negatively affects the European Union and its role."
He also received US Senator James Paul Clancyford and his accompanying delegation, in the presence of US Ambassador to Lebanon Michelle Issa. They reviewed general conditions in Lebanon and the region, political developments, and bilateral relations.
Berri told Clancyford that "Israel has not complied at any moment with any of the agreements concluded since Resolution 425 through Resolution 1701, the November 2024 agreement, up to the Tripartite Framework Agreement." He stated: "The cause remains the same: Israel’s non-compliance with the obligations of all agreements."
