The General Directorate of Customs announced in a statement that the Land Anti-Smuggling Division in Beirut seized more than 3,500 cartons of smuggled cigarettes of various brands. The contraband was concealed inside a diesel fuel tank specifically manufactured to serve as a smuggling hideout and loaded onto a "pickup" vehicle.

The operation followed surveillance and tracking from the Bekaa Valley to Beirut, where division officers discovered a rear opening in the tank used to insert and hide the cigarette quantities. This attempt aimed to bypass inspection procedures and disguise the actual cargo by exploiting the tank's external appearance to suggest it was intended for transporting fuel.

The operation highlights smugglers' resort to increasingly complex concealment methods, going beyond packaging goods to manufacturing dedicated hiding places for them, making precise monitoring and field follow-up essential elements in detecting and thwarting such schemes.

The offender was taken to the division's headquarters, and the seized items were transferred there to complete the investigation and take legal measures under the supervision of the competent judiciary.
