President Aoun: Israel Violates Agreement; Lebanese Army Fulfilling Its Duty

President of the Republic Joseph Aoun discussed the political and security situation in Lebanon and the region, bilateral relations, and ways to enhance cooperation between Lebanon and the Netherlands with Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sjoerd Sjoerdsma.

During the meeting, Aoun stated that "Israel continues to violate the framework agreement reached during the Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations in Washington by persisting in bombing and destroying southern villages it occupies, as well as demolishing homes and properties."

He added: "The army is fully fulfilling its duties in the areas where it has redeployed, and any claims to the contrary aim to discredit the army and cast doubt on its role and commitment to decisions made by the political authority."

He noted that "rebuilding the south is the responsibility of the Lebanese state, but this cannot happen while the Israeli occupation continues."

He said: "Lebanon remains committed to keeping UNIFIL in the south due to its important role. If extension becomes impossible, Lebanon welcomes any friendly or allied country willing to continue UNIFIL’s work, particularly in providing support to the army and southerners in humanitarian, social, health, educational, and communication sectors. Legal arrangements are currently being discussed to establish such an international presence."

On his part, the Dutch minister said: "My country stands in solidarity with Lebanon and the Lebanese people amid the difficult circumstances they face. My visit to Nabatiye yesterday allowed me to closely observe the extent of the suffering endured by citizens and the war’s impact on their lives and regions."
