Public Works Launches First Steps to Rehabilitate Al-Qalaa Airport

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has launched the first implementation steps for rehabilitating infrastructure and facilities at Al-Qalaa Airport – President René Moawad Airport, as part of its plan to rehabilitate and operate the airport, enabling a gradual transition from the planning and preparation phase to actual field implementation.

In this context, the ministry announced via the General Procurement Authority platform: "Tender for the execution of rehabilitation and maintenance works on the road, access routes, and parking areas of Al-Qalaa Airport, with bid opening scheduled for August 27, 2026, as these works constitute an essential component of the requirements for rehabilitating the airport’s surrounding infrastructure and ensuring readiness of access points, parking areas, and supporting facilities necessary for its operation."

This step is part of an integrated plan adopted by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to reintegrate Al-Qalaa Airport into Lebanon’s aviation transport map through phased implementation of required works, concurrently with completing the necessary technical, operational, security, and administrative requirements in accordance with established civil aviation standards and regulations.

The ministry emphasized that "reopening Al-Qalaa Airport represents a national and strategic project extending beyond the airport’s technical and operational aspects, as it can play a key role in developing Lebanon’s aviation transport system, enhancing capabilities in the civil aviation sector, and providing additional air infrastructure to support Beirut International Airport – Rafic Hariri, thereby increasing flexibility within Lebanon’s aviation transport sector."

It stressed that "its approach to this file is based on transitioning from plans and studies to gradual on-site implementation, where each component of the project is completed according to priorities and operational needs, starting with essential infrastructure, access routes, and parking areas, progressing toward completion of all required equipment, facilities, and services for safe, organized, and sustainable airport operations."

The ministry noted that "launching this tender marks one of the first practical steps in the rehabilitation path of Al-Qalaa Airport, and work will continue progressively to complete the remaining phases, in coordination with relevant official, security, and technical authorities, ultimately achieving the ministry’s goal of reopening the airport and leveraging its potential within a comprehensive national vision for developing Lebanon’s aviation transport sector."
