Roman Lead Sarcophagi Repatriated to Lebanon by U.S. After FBI Probe
The United States has repatriated Roman-era lead sarcophagi looted illegally from Tyre in southern Lebanon, following an FBI investigation and formal handover to the Lebanese Consulate in New York.

The United States has returned ancient Roman lead sarcophagi to Lebanon after recovering them through a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) probe. The artifacts were illicitly excavated from Tyre in southern Lebanon and subsequently handed over to the Lebanese Consulate in New York, according to Agence France-Presse.
The U.S. Embassy announced the transfer via the X platform, describing it as evidence of the “strong partnership between the United States and Lebanon in combating the illegal trafficking of cultural property.”
Origins and significance of the sarcophagi
Lebanese Minister of Culture Ghassan Salamé stated in a comment that “all evidence indicates the artifacts were discovered in Tyre during illegal excavation operations.” He added that “these pieces possess distinctive artistic, decorative, and technical features representative of Tyre’s lead sarcophagus workshops — among the most active and prolific in antiquity.”
FBI findings on provenance and smuggling
A statement issued by the FBI’s New York Field Office confirmed the sarcophagi date to the Roman era, specifically between the second and third centuries BCE. It noted the items were stolen during unauthorized excavations in Tyre or its surrounding area before being smuggled out of Lebanon. The statement did not specify when the alleged smuggling occurred.
Discovery in auction catalogues and Lebanese follow-up
The artifacts appeared in sales catalogues of the “Arte Primitivo” exhibition, a venue specializing in antiquities trade. Lebanon has confirmed it will pursue the case jointly with U.S. authorities.
