Faculties and branches of the Lebanese University witnessed a complete shutdown and paralysis in various administrative and technical departments, in response to the call launched by the Association of Employees at the Lebanese University.
The field follow-up tour on the first day of the strike recorded a commitment rate reaching 100 percent in most areas. From the Municipal Complex in Tripoli in the north, to the Hadath and Fanar complexes in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, and through the faculties of Bekaa, Sidon, Tyre, and Nabatieh in the south, administrative and service operations completely stopped, with a total absence of employees, workers, and trainers from their workplaces.
This "warning" movement, according to a statement by the "Association," comes "as a protest cry against the official procrastination in granting employees their acquired rights." The demands of the protesters are summarized in the following points:
Disbursement of delayed salaries: Immediate demand for two salaries approved for the public sector since November 2023 and not yet disbursed.
Adjustment of transportation allowance: Immediate reconsideration of allowances in line with the insane rise in fuel prices.
Trainers' file: Correcting the existing imbalance in the administrative and technical structure and addressing the restricted competition file.
The Association affirmed "that the unity of stance among employees today is a clear message to those concerned," stressing "that the strike continues for tomorrow, Thursday, the 7th of this May, coinciding with the movements of public sector unions."
The Association's meetings remain open pending the meeting of the body on Friday, the 8th of May, to evaluate the stage and make the appropriate decision regarding escalation in the coming days, affirming "that returning to work is conditional on achieving the legitimate demands to ensure the dignity of employees and the continuity of the largest public educational institution in Lebanon."
