Documentary reveals Diana’s fear Harry would fade in William’s shadow
A three-part documentary featuring unpublished 1991 recordings highlights Princess Diana's concern that Prince Harry might struggle to find his place alongside future King William.

A forthcoming three-part documentary titled "Diana: The Unheard" is set to bring renewed attention to Princess Diana’s private anxieties regarding her two sons. The film incorporates previously unreleased audio recordings, offering a direct look into the late royal’s thoughts on family dynamics within the monarchy.
Secret recordings from 1991
The core of the documentary relies on approximately five hours of covert conversations conducted by Diana with her friend Dr. James Colthurst in 1991. Fox News reported that these tapes were partially utilized in Andrew Morton’s controversial 1992 biography, "Diana: Her True Story." Producers told Deadline that the material includes candid discussions about William’s position in the line of succession and details concerning Diana’s troubled marriage to then-Prince Charles.
Fears of overshadowing
Royal commentator Helena Chard noted that Diana worried Harry would face difficulties establishing his own identity while growing up in the shadow of his older brother, who was destined to become king. Christopher Andersen, a British royal affairs expert, stated that Diana feared from the outset that Harry might "wither" under the weight of William’s future role. She anticipated deep-seated insecurity and persistent self-doubt for the younger prince.
Andersen highlighted that William, now 44, shared these concerns with his mother early on. He often tried to avoid hurting his brother’s feelings. In one of their final conversations, just hours before her death, William expressed worry that a photo shoot at Eton College would make Harry feel ignored. Despite this, Diana believed William would succeed as monarch but remained anxious about the "heir and spare" dynamic affecting Harry, who is 42.
Impact of the rift
Experts agree that Diana believed strongly in the bond between her sons and did not anticipate the eventual estrangement between them. Kinsey Schofield, another royal analyst, suggested Diana’s primary concern was actually the burden placed on William as the future king, rather than Harry’s role as a support figure. Schofield pointed out that Harry once held significant public appeal due to his successful military career and the founding of the Invictus Games.
According to Schofield, Harry had every opportunity to build a meaningful life within the institution, regardless of his birth order. Both Andersen and Schofield concur that Diana would have been shocked and deeply saddened by the current split. Andersen remarked that it is difficult to imagine such a division occurring if she were still alive, noting that things would not have reached such an impasse.
Schofield emphasized that the shared trauma of losing their mother publicly should have united the brothers for life. Regarding Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties, both experts believe Diana would not have endorsed the move. While she might have sympathized with his frustrations, her rebellious nature does not imply support for his departure or subsequent actions. Ultimately, the recordings serve as a reminder of the maternal priorities that defined Diana’s life.
