Gayle King revealed her surprise and appreciation for William Bumpus’s recent apology regarding his infidelity during their marriage.

William Bumpus recently issued an apology for his infidelity during his marriage to Gayle King, a gesture that reportedly took King by surprise. The couple married in 1982 and divorced in 1993, with their separation drawing considerable media attention. King has previously disclosed that Bumpus had an extramarital relationship with one of her close friends during their marriage.
King appeared on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, where she discussed discovering Bumpus’s affair. At the time, the couple had two children together. Their marriage lasted nearly 11 years before ending in 1993. Recently, Bumpus spoke to TMZ, offering a public apology to King and their family.
In his statement, Bumpus said, “My deepest apologies to Gayle, to our daughter Kirby and her husband, Virgil, to our son William and his wife, Elise, and to our three grandchildren, for the pain I caused decades ago. Those actions were mine. I have long owned them — including publicly in my own words in 2016, which still stand.”
He acknowledged King’s right to share her painful experience publicly and expressed gratitude toward her for giving him their children, whom he described as the “two greatest gifts” of his life.
When asked about the apology, King said she was “surprised.” She stated, “I was surprised that you guys got him. A, that you found him, that’s number one. And B, that he was even talking. Because he never talks. So, I was surprised, but I can also say I appreciated what he had to say.”
