Sources told PEOPLE Meghan Markle and Prince Harry discussed her acting comeback before the Guy Ritchie Netflix project emerged — a move that predates her 2017 exit from Hollywood.
Discussions about Meghan Markle’s return to acting began well before the emergence of the Guy Ritchie-led Netflix drama “The Gentlemen,” according to recent reports cited by PEOPLE. These conversations reportedly took place prior to any formal opportunity arising for her involvement in the series.
Markle stepped away from acting in 2017 after marrying Prince Harry and becoming the Duchess of Sussex. Before that, she was widely recognized for portraying Rachel Zane in the legal drama “Suits.” Her departure from Hollywood coincided with her integration into the British royal family.
At the Edinburgh TV Festival, Manda Levin, Netflix’s UK scripted chief, was asked about the speculation surrounding Markle’s potential role in “The Gentlemen.” She replied, “All bets are off.”
No official confirmation has been issued regarding Markle’s casting in the series. As of the time of writing, her specific role remains undisclosed. A conflicting report suggests her involvement may have been withdrawn.
Tina Brown, former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, stated that intense backlash in the UK made proceeding with Markle’s casting “untenable.” She added, “This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK. More to come.” None of these claims have been verified by an official party.
Though inactive in mainstream entertainment since 2017, Markle has participated in documentary-style projects including “Live to Lead,” “With Love, Meghan,” “Harry & Meghan,” and “Heart of Invictus.” She also appeared as herself in the film Close Personal Friends.
