Jenna Bush Hager revealed she cried as a child upon finding her father George W. Bush’s old wedding announcement in his memory box.
Jenna Bush Hager, the NBC Today co-host and daughter of former US President George W. Bush, disclosed a personal family discovery that caused emotional distress during her childhood. The incident involved finding evidence of a previous engagement involving her father.
The Memory Box Discovery
Hager detailed the event while appearing on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle. She explained that the revelation occurred when she was in the third grade. After receiving a poor grade on a math test, she challenged her father by suggesting he likely had similar academic struggles.
In response, George W. Bush retrieved a memory box created by his mother, which functioned like a photo album. He intended to show her his own report card. However, Hager noticed a different document within the collection.
“I saw a wedding announcement to someone who wasn’t my mom,” Hager recalled. She stated that this observation triggered an immediate emotional reaction. “I started crying and made it about myself. As a third grader does.”
Reframing the Past Event
While the discovery initially upset her, Hager now views the situation through the lens of an adult author and television personality. She expressed admiration for her father’s decision to end the prior relationship. Hager noted that calling off a wedding is a difficult choice, one she respects in retrospect.
The engagement in question involved Cathryn Lee Wolfman, George W. Bush’s high school sweetheart. The couple dated during their time at Yale University before becoming engaged. Their relationship eventually faded, leading them to cancel the planned marriage. George W. Bush later married Laura Bush.
