Liz Meriwether Joins Britney Spears Biopic as Screenplay Writer
Universal Pictures advances Britney Spears biopic with Liz Meriwether hired to draft the screenplay based on Spears' bestselling memoir.

Universal Pictures has taken a significant step in developing the Britney Spears biopic by bringing acclaimed television writer Liz Meriwether on board to write an early draft of the screenplay.
The Britney Spears Biopic's Screenplay Development
Liz Meriwether, known for creating the series New Girl and writing projects such as “No Strings Attached,” “The Dropout,” and “Dying for Sex,” has joined the team adapting Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me” for film. This information was reported by Page Six.
She will collaborate with director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, who are known for their work on Wicked. While Chu and Platt had started outlining the screenplay, Meriwether’s role is to further develop the adaptation.
Background of the Memoir and Film Rights
Published in 2023, Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me” became a New York Times bestseller and sold over 6 million copies worldwide through Simon & Schuster. The book offers a candid account of Spears’ rise to fame, her past relationships, and the conservatorship imposed by the courts and her parents.
The memoir renewed public attention on Spears’ life, especially her conservatorship, which ended in 2021, and these events are expected to be a central theme in the film.
Prior to Universal securing the film rights, the memoir attracted interest from major studios and production companies including Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, Fox, Shonda Rhimes’ production company, Brad Pitt’s Plan B, and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap.
