Singer Lizzo clarified that her weight loss was driven by physical discomfort, not health issues, asserting her brand is defined by joy rather than body size.

Physical discomfort, not a lack of health, motivated Lizzo’s recent weight loss, the singer stated during an appearance on The Jason Lee Show. She challenged the notion that critics had reduced her professional identity solely to her dress size, insisting that joy remains the core of her public persona.
According to Complex, Lizzo asserted she maintained excellent health metrics even when carrying more weight. “I think that I was extremely healthy at my highest weight. My blood was extremely healthy,” she said. She noted that while her physiology remained sound, the physical burden created discomfort in specific areas.

The Grammy winner detailed how increasing mass began to hinder her performance capabilities. Back pain became a significant issue as she gained weight, making the physical demands of her career difficult to sustain. “Being able to do my job, that changed ‘cause I was getting heavier and my back was hurting,” Lizzo explained.
Lizzo expressed surprise at claims that shedding pounds damaged her marketability. “I was really surprised when people said that me looking smaller, releasing weight, was f*cking up my brand,” she remarked. She questioned whether audiences perceived her value primarily through her body size, asking, “Is my brand being fat?”
Reflecting on this perception, she concluded that her appeal lies elsewhere. “One thing I had to realize is my brand is joy,” Lizzo stated. She emphasized that fans were drawn to her music, personality, and confidence rather than her physical dimensions. “When I was bigger and joyful, all they saw was fat. But that joy was the thing that arrested you. Joy was the thing that got your attention.”
These comments follow Lizzo’s initiation of a weight-loss journey in 2023. Last year, she disclosed beginning exercise routines, specifically Pilates, during a period marked by depression. This personal shift occurred alongside workplace allegations brought forward by former employees.
