A report published by The Telegraph on October 17 alleges that Netflix employed what insiders call the “oldest marketing trick” to generate publicity for its television series, The Gentlemen. According to sources close to Meghan Markle, the streaming platform leaked information regarding her potential participation in the show’s third season to drive viewership.

Allegations of promotional manipulation

Individuals within Markle’s circle believe she was leveraged to support the promotion of the second season. One source stated to the outlet, “Some people in her camp feel she was used to help promote season two, because they knew it wasn’t as good as the first season and had already commissioned a third.”

The insider elaborated on the strategy: “It’s the oldest marketing trick in the book: get a big name to read a script, then leak that you’re ‘in conversation’ with them when, in reality, nothing is particularly far along.” They noted that while the situation left a “sour taste” in the Sussex camp, Netflix achieved its objective of securing high viewing figures and extensive media coverage for the second season.

Status of acting negotiations

A separate source confirmed that Markle is no longer engaged in discussions to appear in the crime drama. This development follows earlier reports from this year suggesting the Duchess would return to acting via a role in the series’ third season, claims that subsequently lost credibility.

The timing of these rumors coincided with significant personal movements for Markle. She relocated to the United Kingdom with Prince Harry, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet in late August. Shortly after news of her potential involvement circulated, the first episode of The Gentlemen Season 2 premiered in early September.

Markle’s cautious approach to scripts

Markle, recognized for her portrayal of Rachel Zane in Suits, stepped away from acting in 2017, one year after meeting Prince Harry. The Telegraph indicated that she remains seriously interested in a professional comeback. However, she is reportedly reading scripts with extreme caution to prevent leaks to the press.

Sources suggest she maintains strict confidentiality regarding these projects, choosing not to share details with friends or her wider social circle.
