Kristi Noem endorsed Ken Paxton over James Talarico, prompting Kacey Musgraves to reference Noem’s memoir about shooting her dog.

A digital dispute erupted between Kristi Noem and country musician Kacey Musgraves following the former governor’s political intervention in Texas. The conflict originated when Noem publicly backed Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton while disparaging Musgraves. In turn, the singer delivered a cutting reply alluding to Noem’s controversial personal history.
The exchange intensified after Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico appeared at a Musgraves performance in Dallas. Noem used this event to elevate Ella Langley above Musgraves, explicitly linking her musical preference to her political stance on the Texas Senate race.
“I’ll take @ellalangleymusic over Kacey Musgraves any day,” Noem posted on X. She added, “And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.” This statement fused the artist comparison with her endorsement of Paxton.
Musgraves refused to ignore the slight, responding directly to Noem’s comments. “I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you have shot it,” she wrote.
This remark targeted a specific incident detailed in Noem’s 2024 memoir. In that book, Noem recounted killing her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, claiming the animal was untrainable. That account had previously generated significant public backlash.
By invoking the memoir, Musgraves shifted the focus from the political endorsement to Noem’s past actions. The interaction highlighted how celebrity remarks can intersect with campaign narratives, turning a policy position into a broader online discussion involving music fans.
Both Musgraves and Langley remain active on tour during this period. The contest between Talarico and Paxton continues to attract close attention as a key political battle in Texas.
While neither the criticism nor the rebuttal alters the candidates’ standing in the race, the incident demonstrates how cultural events can become political talking points. Musgraves’ comeback ensured Noem’s comparison received scrutiny for reasons extending beyond the initial endorsement.
