Penélope Cruz discussed the difficulty of explaining her and husband Javier Bardem's consecutive Oscar wins to their children during a podcast appearance.

Explaining the statistical improbability of two consecutive Academy Award victories to young children proved challenging for Penélope Cruz. The actress addressed this specific hurdle while speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, noting that even she found the timing of her and husband Javier Bardem’s wins difficult to comprehend.
Cruz recorded the conversation at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where she reflected on the couple’s shared professional milestones. She described the situation as a "crazy coincidence," emphasizing how hard it was to convey the rarity of their achievements to their kids. The pair’s Oscar history spans two separate ceremonies, creating a unique narrative arc in Hollywood.
Bardem secured the Best Supporting Actor award in 2008 for his role as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. Cruz followed this victory in 2009, winning Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. This triumph marked her as the first Spanish actress to receive an acting Oscar, a distinction that added weight to the family’s collective success.
Despite these accolades, Cruz noted that their children, Leo, 15, and Luna, 13, struggled to grasp the significance of the events. She expressed a desire for them to eventually understand that such outcomes are not ordinary experiences. “The thing is when you have to explain to your kids and you have to say, ‘It’s such a crazy coincidence that one day you will understand why,’” she stated.
The professional partnership between Cruz and Bardem predates their awards by nearly two decades. They first worked together in the 1992 Spanish film Jamón Jamón before marrying in 2010. Their most recent collaboration, Bunker, represents their tenth joint project, continuing a long-standing creative bond.
In Bunker, the actors portray a married couple whose relationship strains after Bardem’s character agrees to build a survival shelter for a wealthy tech entrepreneur. Cruz highlighted the deep trust developed over years of working together, which allows them to navigate complex scenes. She explained that this history enables them to take risks on set, knowing each other’s support is guaranteed.
Both actors have accumulated multiple nominations beyond their wins. Cruz received nods for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, while Bardem was recognized for Before Night Falls, Biutiful, and Loving Pablo. These additional credits underscore the sustained critical acclaim both performers have maintained throughout their careers.
